Smallpox is a highly lethal disease that has caused social disruption, economic losses, and killed millions worldwide. The smallpox vaccine was crucial in eliminating smallpox. Due to the diligence and commitment of Edward Jenner and WHO, smallpox was eradicated by 1980. The smallpox vaccine stands as a medical turning point that made history by eradicating smallpox and laid the groundwork for future vaccine research and development. This led to the creation of the diphtheria, tetanus, and influenza vaccines, and continues to aid us in the creation of vaccines today.
